The education of young adults has always been a particular concern of the founder Ingeborg Suhr. She was always very aware that it is children and young people who will reshape and realign society. Education and formation were therefore essential to the founder. For this reason, the funding focus “education and formation” was anchored in the foundation’s statutes and is implemented in various projects and educational institutions.

Scholarships

The Ingeborg Suhr Foundation sees a particular responsibility in supporting educational projects in form of scholarships in order to actively assist young people. Every year, the Ingeborg Suhr Foundation sponsors five Deutschlandstipendien (Germany Scholarships) for students at the HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU).

Since 2011, the German Federal Government, together with funding partners, has supported talented and high-achieving students with the Deutschlandstipendium (Germany Scholarship). It aims to recognize outstanding academic achievements and social engagement, strengthen society’s sense of responsibility for education and talent, and ultimately contribute to a new scholarship culture in Germany.

Traditional Craftsmanship
– rediscovered

Craftsmanship has been essential for Ingeborg Suhr – for herself as well as for young people. Consequently, the Ingeborg Suhr Foundation supports young people in discovering additional perspectives for personal development beyond the university framework, thus promoting the Jugendbauhütte Hamburg gGmbH, a voluntary service in monument preservation with the German Foundation for Monument Protection under the sponsorship of the ijgd (Internationale Jugendgemeinschaftsdienste).

This project enables young people to gain firsthand access to craftsmanship, architecture, and architectural culture. Specific to this Hamburg version of the Jugendbauhütte is the direct connection to the so-called „Hufnerhaus“, a monument that serves as a practical training object and forms the “first teacher”. This project provides orientation in life and career planning and creates the opportunity to actively participate in preserving cultural heritage. In addition to working on the construction site, the young people are active on various sites in the fields of craftsmanship and monument preservation.
